Comments: According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, regarding the button design, "The (Georgia) legislature adopted Georgia’s state seal in 1799. Military buttons of the state depict the seal’s obverse, or coat of arms side with the three classical pillars supporting an arch bearing the word “Constitution.” The design symbolizes the legislative, judicial, and executive departments of government supporting the constitution. Banners inscribed “Wisdom,” “Justice,” and “Moderation” are wrapped on the pillars. At the side of one pillar a militiaman stands with a drawn sword, signifying defense of the constitution by state military forces." This Georgia state seal coat button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
