This very large artillery relic is the iron base portion and copper sabot of a fired Confederate 6.4 inch Harding shell. Recovered in the Charleston, SC area by a Virginia digger several decades ago, it weighs approximately 13.4 pounds and measures approximately 6-1/4 inches in diameter. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", its copper sabot has the “hook-slant” type rifling grooves which indicates that it was fired from a rifled 32 pounder gun. This huge artillery fragment will display very nicely and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
