Item: Stirrup with Hourglass Opening in Tread
Construction: Iron
Condition: Excellent, excavated. The iron is remarkably smooth with only mild pitting. There appears to be a very thin protective layer of clear coat on its surface. There are no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: North Anna, VA area.
Approximate size: 4-1/4 x 5-3/8 inches.
Reference: An example of a similar, but not exact, stirrup is found in the following relic reference book:
See the above pages in the additional images.
Comments: Stirrups are recovered from time to time in areas of Civil War activity. This example was acquired directly from the family of the digger who hunter several Virginia Civil War sites during his lifetime. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War cavalry, horse tack, or general relic collection.
