Militia Panel Waist Belt Plate, ca. 1845-1860

SOLD

Item: Militia Panel Waist Belt Plate, ca. 1845-1860 including belt end keeper.
Construction: Die-struck rolled brass plate with applied brass tongue and belt loop bar with two iron tangs.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated. Its front has a nice mellow dull brass patina that shows a spread wing eagle with a lined shield with star, an olive branch in its left talon, and three arrows in its right talon. The rear has the brass tongue, belt loop bar with both tangs and belt end keeper. The tongue is at an angle such that it is preventing the keeper from falling out. It has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Approximate size:
57 x 83 mm.
Comments:  An example of this pre-Civil War plate is pictured in the second edition of O'Donnell and Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates", as plate 409 on page 259. A scan of this page is included in the additional images. This buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated pre-Civil War plate or general relic collection.
