New York Militia Officer Belt Buckle - Cole's Hill - Museum Quality

Item: New York Militia Officer Belt Buckle - Cole's Hill - Museum Quality
Construction: Sand cast brass with raised wreath and old English script letters "NY". 
Condition: Excellent, solid, excavated. The buckle has a brown patina with hints of green in a few areas. The plate has a moderate body curve with no cracks, breaks, or repairs. The belt attachment bar is present and the rear retains its integral tongue which has a small casting flaw. Lightly etched into the rear beside the tongue are believed to be Roman numerals. 
Recovered: Cole's Hill, Culpeper County, VA area. (see comments below)

48 x 81 mm.

Comments:  New York militia officer buckles are not often recovered. According to the tag that will accompany the buckle, it was "found at Coles Hill (also known as Lone Tree Hill) near Orange, VA. by Sarah Anne Nance Page about 1965." This museum quality buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
