This excavated large number "2" was recovered from a 2nd cavalry camp near Washington DC and, due to its size, likely adorned a wagon or storage trunk. It is constructed of solder filled stamped brass which now has a brown-green patina. The area where the brass meets the solder has the typical light build-up of tan encrustation often seen in the same area on excavated plates. The rear solder is solid and nearly complete with only light surface flaking primarily in the center area. Its two iron attachment devices are no longer present. It measures approximately 2-3/8 x 3-5/16 inches and weighs 2-3/4 ounces. This relic is in very good condition and has no cracks, breaks, repairs, or major bends. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War insignia, cavalry, or general relic collection.
