Ohio Volunteer Militia Cartridge Box

This Ohio Volunteer Militia cartridge box with plate is not only a rare find but also an awesome looking relic. Its accompanying documentation reveals that it was picked up by a farmer whose property was adjacent to a battlefield in the Chattanooga, TN area. After being stored in the farmer's barn for many years, it eventually ended up on loan to the now defunct Tennessee Civil War Museum situated at the base of Lookout Mountain. From there, it was returned to its owner and subsequently sold when he decided to part with his collection. The box is in rough condition, and it is unknown how long after the war it remained outside in the elements prior to being picked up by the farmer. The leather is stiff with the edges of the flap curled upwards. Its side-walls and tins are no longer present. The lower body of the box has separated from the top portion but is held together by one of the two rear leather belt loops. With the exception of the belt loops, any other straps, slings, or buckles, this box may have had, are no longer present. Its large brass finial is still in place that the flap would have been secured to. At some point the leather was treated as a preservative measure. The box length and width measurement varies, but it is approximately 7 x 7 inches with a 2-3 inch depth depending on where it is measured. No repairs have been made to this cartridge box.
The box plate is in very good condition and is constructed of stamped sheet brass, solder fill, with two complete iron attachment loops. It is unsecured to the flap with its two iron loops simply resting in two holes in the flap. Any strip of leather that once held it to the flap is no longer present. The front of the plate, with its dark brown patina, has raised letters "OVM" representing Ohio Volunteer Militia. There are no cracks or breaks in the brass. The rear has a complete complement of solder and both loops which are rusty and straight-up. No repairs have been made to the plate and it measures 55 x 85 mm. This cartridge box and plate will be an excellent addition to any recovered Civil War accouterment or general relic collection.
