This excavated Sage bullet for .44 caliber army revolver is in very good condition and is from the collection of the legendary relic hunter Mac Mason. Mac Mason was also a historian, author, and artist who applied his skillful and artistic lettering to many Civil War artifacts. This bullet is one of those artifacts and is marked with his recognizable lettering style. This example, with its tan-grey-white patina, is marked on one side: "SAGE PAT. / SEAMLESS / .455 / 44 REV." representing the bullet manufacturer & type, actual diameter size in inches, and caliber revolver used in. The opposite side is marked "0.694" representing its length in inches. Its base is marked "B. HUNrd" representing Berkeley Hundred, also known as Harrison's Landing. Harrison's Landing is located along the James River in Charles City county, VA where General George McClellan camped during the summer of 1862 after the battle of Malvern Hill. Examples of this bullet can be found in "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" by W. Reid McKee and M. E. Mason, Jr. on page 28, item 123 and also in "Round Ball to Rimfire, Part Three" by Dean Thomas, on page 137, item 891. See additional images in this listing for scans of these pages. Regarding these bullets, Thomas' remarks that they were "Cast, solid base, for Hotchkiss patent "seamless skin" cartridges by D.C. Sage.". To learn more about Mac Mason, click his linked name. This Sage army revolver bullet will be an excellent addition to any Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
