Rectangular Belt Plate - Plain Sheet Brass - Crimped Edge

Item: Excavated Rectangular Belt Plate - Plain Sheet Brass - Crimped Edge - Likely Confederate manufacture.
Construction: Rectangular sheet brass with crimped or folded edges. Rear with brass tongue and belt loop bar.
Condition: Good, excavated. Its flawless brass front has an even rich brown patina. The rear has the three solder marks where the brass tongue and belt loop bar once were attached.  The overall body of the plate is in very good condition with only very minor edge bending at the belt loop bar end. The plate has no cracks, breaks, major bends or repairs.
Recovered: Remington/Brandy Station, VA area.
Approximate size:  53 x 76 mm.
Comments:  An example of this plate can be found in "Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates" by Lon W. Keim, M.D. on page 103 as figure 142. See this page in the image enlargements of this belt plate. The same plate shown in the Keim book is also pictured in Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" on page 9 as item #1&2. Phillips states that the crimping was to reinforce the plate. This rarely seen crimped sheet brass rectangular belt plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
