Backmark: "AMERICAN BUTTON Co / NEWARK, N.J." dm
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 25 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. Loaded with gilt. Small push to center front. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.

Comments: According to "American Button Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks and Dates" by William F. McGuinn and Bruce S. Bazelon, page 3, the American Button Co. of Newark, NJ "began making uniform buttons (military, railroad, etc.) in 1901 per letter in US National Museum Collections. The factory burned in 1917 & the company ceased to exist in 1920. It was bought by Waterbury Button Co.". This Philadelphia Police coat button will be an excellent addition to any excavated button or general relic collection.
