Item: CS 3 Inch Bourreleted Read Shell - Manufactured at the Marshall, TX Arsenal
Construction: Cast iron with copper ring sabot.
Fuzing: Wood fuze adaptor with paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 7 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 7-1/4 inches.
Condition: Good, unfired, excavated. Its wood fuze plug and paper time fuze are not present. The copper sabot is present and has three deep filed-in flame grooves. The shells body surface is pitted but very stable. It was cleaned, lightly clear coated, and professionally deactivated. There are no repairs.

Comments: This very rare shell has been in Peter George's collection for 35-40 years. Peter is the co-author of the widely used reference "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War". In my discussion with him regarding this shell, he advised that the three deep filed-in flame grooves indicated that it was manufactured at the Marshall, Texas Arsenal. He added, "this example is actually in better condition than those recovered underwater at Buffalo Bayou, in Houston, TX." This artillery shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
