This excavated Confederate sword hanger is in very good condition. It is constructed of cast brass which now has a nice woodsy green patina. Recovered from Culpeper County, VA in the area of Brandy Station, these devices hung from the leather sword belt and were designed to carry the officer's swords. A similar example of this sword hanger can be found on page 211 in illustration #5 in "Civil War Artifacts: A guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch and also on page 183 in illustration #8 in "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips. This sword hanger has no cracks, breaks, repairs, or major bends and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
