Three Hook NCO Eagle Plate - Excavated

SOLD

Item: Three Hook NCO Eagle Plate - Excavated
Construction:
Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and three iron wire loops.
Condition:
Excellent, excavated. Its brass face has a nice mellow patina and, along with the condition of its solder and hooks, may indicate that it was an early battlefield pickup. It shows a well-defined eagle clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left. The rim has light bending and a few nicks. The rear has a full complement of solder with all three iron attachment loops solidly intact. The plate has no cracks, repairs, or major bends.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate diameter: 63 mm.
Reference: Other examples of three hook eagle plates are pictured in:

  • "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, on page 281, as plate 444.
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 189, item 1.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillip, page 7, items 1 & 2.
  • "Field Guide to Excavated Federal Plates" by Daniel J. Peters on page 15.

Scans of the above noted reference book pages are included in the additional images.

Comments:  Three hook NCO eagle plates are not often recovered and finding one with all three hooks is indeed a rarity. This eagle plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
