US Belt Buckle - Inspector Marked

Item: US Belt Buckle - Inspector Marked
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and arrow type belt attachment hooks.
Condition: Good, excavated, solid. Its brass front has a mostly green patina with areas of brown and tan. There is damage in the area of the rim above and to the right of the letter "S" along with less noticeable chipping along other areas of the rim. The rest of the front is in very good shape with no cracks, breaks, or major bends. The rear retains all three belt attachment hooks. Much of the rear solder is significantly pebbled and deteriorated with the exception of a small unaffected area which is stamped with a partial inspector's mark of "T. J. SHEPARD". The buckle has not been repaired.
Recovered: Dinwiddie County, VA
Approximate size:  56 x 87 mm.
Comments: This buckle was acquired directly from the digger, Robert Braswell, Jr. of Gaston, NC., who recovered many fine relics from both North Carolina and Virginia over several decades. Learn more about Robert and his relic detecting by clicking on his name above. The design of the raised letters US on its front, along with the condition of the solder and the presence of the inspector mark, all indicate that this plate was the product of Boyd & Sons of Boston. The manufacturer's stamp of "Boyd & Sons / Boston", along with small letters "US" were likely stamped into the solder in the area that is now pebbled rendering them unreadable. This marked buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
