Item: US Belt Buckle - Stud Hooks - Field Repair
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and stud (aka "puppy paw") type attachment hooks.
Condition: Good, excavated. Its brass front has a rich brown patina. The rear has a complete and solid complement of solder. Both stud attachment hooks are present but the single tongue hook is missing with only a stump remaining. The hole directly adjacent to the missing hook is clearly a field repair made by the soldier so the buckle could still be of use. There is a slight inward bend in the body of the buckle. There no cracks or modern repairs.
Recovered: Unknown
Approximate size: 54 x 85 mm.
Comments: This excavated US belt buckle with field repair represents not only the ingenuity of the soldier but also the pride they had in their uniform and what it represented. It will be a great display piece as well as an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle, plate, or general relic collection.
