Federal Carbine Sling Buckle with Leather Belt Portion

SOLD

Item: Excavated Federal Carbine Sling Buckle with Leather Belt Portion.
Construction:
Cast brass with brazed on middle bar and rotating tangs.
Use: Fastened the cavalryman's leather sling that carried a carbine.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, complete. The unmarked brass has weathered into a reddish-brown patina with wear from use, and ground action typically found on brass after decades out in the elements. Both tangs are present and are held in place by a significant portion of the original leather belt. The leather is still solidly attached and is in remarkably good condition. What is most interesting is the fact that some of the stitching of the leather is still present and visible. The buckle has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Comments: See the additional images for a similar US carbine sling buckle as depicted in O'Donnell and Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates", as plate 799 on page 475. This example with leather belt portion will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle or general relic collection.
Recovered: Reams Station, VA
Approximate size: 50 x 81 mm.
