US Cartridge Box Plate

SOLD

Item: Excavated US Cartridge Box Plate
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with lead fill.
Condition: Fair. The brass face has a deep green patina with a light coating of Culpeper County soil. The rim is bent upwards forming a scoop with the top and side rim edge missing. The rear lead is mostly complete and the wire attachment loops are missing. The plate has not been repaired.
Recovered: Culpeper County, VA
Approximate size: 45 x 80 mm.
Comments: It has been suggested that this plate could have been purposely shaped this way to form a scoop, however 150 years out in the elements in a farm field more likely explains its current state. Still, a very cool piece with an awesome look. The plate is being offered in nearly the same state that it was in when it was recovered, as the digger did not feel compelled to clean his relics. If you like the recently "dug" appearance, then this relic will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
