Item: Excavated US cartridge box plate.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill.
Condition: Good, excavated. Its brass front, with the raised letters "US", has a very nice mixed brown patina. Ground action has created the four minor bumps on the face of the plate in the area opposite the rear iron loop posts. The rear has nearly all of its solder but does show some very minor surface flaking. At the 10 o'clock position of the rear rim there is a ding in the lead revealing some shiny lead, likely a result of a digger's tool. Its iron attachment loops are no longer present. The plate has no bends, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Fredericksburg, VA area.
Approximate size: 54 x 85 mm.
Comments: This cartridge box plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
