Item: Excavated US cartridge box plate.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill.
Condition: Good, excavated. Its brass front, with raised letters "US", has a dark green-brown patina with a freeze cracks in the one, seven, and eight o'çlock areas of the rim. Minor bending is present. The rear has nearly all of its solder with some loss at a two inch area of the rim. Its iron attachment loops are no longer present. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Brandy Station, VA area.
Approximate size: 56 x 88 mm.
Comments: I may have stared at the back of this plate too long, but I believe a see an etching of a bird, maybe, maybe not?? In any event, this cartridge box plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
