US Cartridge Box Plate - Carved Soldier Artwork

SOLD

This excavated US cartridge box plate was recovered from Petersburg, VA area and acquired directly from the relic hunter who kept detailed records of his finds. Every now and then relics are recovered with whittle marks or, in rare instances, intricate carvings, hand-crafted by soldiers using their pocket knives just to pass the time. This cartridge box plate has had both of its top and bottom portions sliced away. A portion of the "S" end of the plate has also been whittled away leaving a partial "S". On the front of the display, the digger notes that this Federal relic was recovered from a Confederate campsite and also notes on the rear that it was carved by a "C.S. Soldier". Having found this relic in a CS camp, the digger may be correct in his assumption that this destruction of US government issue property was the result of a disgusted Johnny Reb! On the rear of the display is a label indicating the date and location of its recovery. A close up image of the label is included in the additional images to the left of this description. The plate is displayed and labeled in a 6-1/4 x 8-1/4 x 3/4 inch glass top display case which will be included. It is held in place by the pressure of the glass top resting upon the items and the rear felt covered batting material. The case and its glass top are secured by straight pins on either side of the box. This US cartridge box plate is in fair condition will be an excellent display for any office, den, or family room, and will also be a great gift for the American history buff.
