US Cavalry Bit Boss - Swirled Stippling

SOLD

Item: US Cavalry Bridle Bit Boss - Swirled Stippled Background
Construction:
Cast brass with raised letters "US".
Use: Decorative device attached to both sides of a US regulation Cavalry bit.
Condition:
Excellent, excavated, solid. Very pleasing Culpeper County rich green patina. The device has an interesting swirled stippled background with crudely cast letters "US". There are minor hairline fractures in the rear and a tiny bit of bright brass showing on the rear edge at the eight o'çlock position where it was lightly nicked by a digger's digging implement. Very mild tab bends. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: Brandy Station, VA.
Approximate size: 1-1/4 x 2-3/16 inches.
Reference: Similar US bit bosses are found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 65.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 80. Also on page 77 as attached to a US regulation cavalry bit.
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 130.

The above pages are included in the additional images.

Comments: What makes this particular bit boss unique is its swirled stippling, while most encountered are plain.  This US bit boss will be an excellent addition to any Civil War cavalry, horse tack, or general relic collection.
