This excavated US poncho button and partial hook is in fair condition and was recovered from Stafford County, VA. These devices were patented by Abel Putnam in 1862 and designed to connect two grommets on a rubber blanket to be used as ponchos by the soldier in inclement weather. The face of the button has plenty of gilt with no pushes, cracks, or breaks. The rear is intact but is missing its hook, as is often the case, when these are recovered. This relic will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
