US Belt Buckle

SOLD

Item: ExcavatedUS belt buckle
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with raised letters "US". Rear with solder fill and brass arrow type attachment hooks.
Condition: Good, excavated. Its brass front has an even rich brown patina with a small portion of the body of the plate below the "US" missing. The rear has nearly all of its solder and two arrow type hooks, with the third belt hook missing. The buckle still retains its body curve and it has no cracks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Brandy Station, VA
Approximate size:  54 x 86 mm.
Comments: The break in the bottom portion of this plate is interesting, in that, it is a clean cut and not jagged. A clean cut would indicate that it was sliced off by something fairly sharp. Since the broken tongue rendered the buckle useless, perhaps it was whittled on by soldier passing time. This plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
