Item: Federal 2.9 inch Read-Parrott Shell
Gun: 10-Pounder Parrott
Construction: Cast iron with thick iron ring sabot.
Fuzing: Parrott zinc fuze plug.
Approximate size: Weight: 9 pounds. Diameter: 2.86 inches. Length: 8-3/8 inches.
Condition: Very good, fired, excavated. The shell's surface is very smooth and has a light layer of clear coat. At some point tape was applied around a portion of the shell's body likely for a label. It is believed that when the tape was removed, the adhesive took the underlying clear coat with it resulting in a lighter colored area. The zinc fuze plug is present but the very top portion is missing. The sabot is present. The head of an Allen bolt shown in the base view fills the drill hole that was made to deactivate the shell. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Smithfield, VA area.
Comments: This artillery shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
