FROM THE PETER GEORGE COLLECTION

Item: Federal 12 Pounder Bormann Fuzed Case-Shot Shell - Unfired - Partial Tin Sabot Straps
Construction: Cast iron with white metal fuze.
Fuzing: Bormann time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 10.4 pounds. Diameter: 4.50 inches.
Condition: Very good, un-fired, excavated. The shell's surface shows moderate pitting. Its protruding Bormann fuze shows several time hashmarks and the numbers "4" and "5" representing the number of seconds that the fuze would burn prior to exploding the case-shot. Surrounding the fuze are remnants of the tinned-iron fuze collar and sabot attachment straps. The shell has been cleaned, lightly clear coated and deactivated. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Seven Days Battles area.
Comments:  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", this unfired case-shot was abandoned by retreating Yankees during the Seven Days battles around Richmond. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
