Item: 12-Pounder Solid Shot Cannonball
Gun: 12-pounder smoothbore, 4.62-inch caliber.
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 11.6 pounds. Diameter: 4.50 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated. The surface has mild pitting with a couple of thin surface divots, one measuring approximately 1-1/4 inches and the other approximately 1/2-inch in diameter. A visible mold seam is present.
Recovered: Spotsylvania County, VA.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", "12 pounder solid shots were the iconic Civil War cannonball however, there were many more explosive cannonballs fired during the war than solid shots. Solid shots were used for battering purposes while explosive shots were more for killing purposes". Solid shot cannonballs contain nothing explosive as they are solid iron. This example was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection. It will display very nicely in any office, den, or family room on a shelf, fireplace hearth, or mantle.
