Item: 18 Pounder Solid Shot Cannonball - Revolutionary War - Marked
Gun: 18-pounder smoothbore.
Construction: Cast iron.
Approximate size: Weight: 17.4 pounds. Diameter: 5.09 inches.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its surface is smooth with nearly no pitting. On the surface is the circular casting mark measuring approximately 29 mm in diameter. It appears to have been treated with electrolysis. No repairs.
Recovered: Yorktown, VA area.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the casting mark mentioned above, is that of the British government cannon manufacturing division. This shot will display very nicely in any office, den, or family room and will also be an excellent addition to any excavated artillery or general relic collection.
