Federal 2.9 Inch Parrott Brass Sabot "Case Shot" Half Shell

SOLD

Item: Fired Unexploded Federal 2.9 Inch Parrott Brass Sabot "Case Shot" Half Shell
Construction: Cast iron with a brass ring sabot.
Fuzing:  Zinc plug/adaptor with a paper time fuze.
Condition: Good, excavated, with substantial exterior pitting. The interior surface is smooth and solid. After it was sawed in half, the entire exposed sawed surface was very lightly clear coated so as to prevent rusting. The exterior has been left untouched and remains in its raw "just dug" state.
Approximate size: Weight: 5.6 pounds. Diameter: 2.91 inches. Length: 8 1/4 inches.
Recovered:
Unknown
Comments:  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", this fired, but unexploded sawed-in-half shell nicely shows its interior contents of an asphalt/pitch matrix with lead balls. Also visible is its threaded zinc fuse adapter still containing its original paper time fuze as well as the black powder contained therein.  Extending towards the shell base is the thin sheet iron flash tube which connected the bottom of the paper time fuze to the miniature tin can near the base. This can, once filled with black powder, is visible in this shell. This case shot half shell will be a wonderful educational display piece as well as excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
