3-inch Hotchkiss Common Shell Ground Burst with Hotchkiss Percussion Fuze

SOLD

This 3-inch Hotchkiss common shell ground burst, with Hotchkiss percussion fuze, was excavated in Funkstown, Md. It was acquired directly from the digger who recovered the parts all within several feet of each other. The parts were re-assembled with epoxy and display quite nicely. Recovered were the following: approximately one half of the upper portion of the shell nose, a portion of the upper part of the shell base to include a section of the lead sabot, and fuze. The fuze itself was recovered in three parts: the body, its cap (top portion) and its slider. It too has been re-assembled and has been done such that it's nearly impossible to see the repair. The slider with pin moves freely inside the fuze body. The entire display is in good solid condition and measures 2.98 inches in width, 6-1/8 inches in length and weighs 3.2 pounds. Printed on the nose by the digger in gold marker is "FUNKSTOWN MD / GROUND BURST". The iron portion has been treated with electrolysis and paraffin as a preservative measure. This Hotchkiss shell display will be an excellent educational tool or addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
