The base view of the interior shows the case-shot, its tar matrix, and the lower section of the solder Schenkl combination time fuze adaptor are all firmly in place. The upper portion of the fuze is no longer present however the fuze threads are still visible. On the side of the shell is the digger’s collection number in black lettering on a white background. There are no repairs.
Recovered: 1972 in the area of Totopotomoy Creek, Hanover County, VA
Comments: Included in the additional images is an image of the digger's index card indicating, in most cases, the item’s identification, assessment of condition, recovery date & location and other general information. In the unlikely event where there are discrepancies between the digger's description and Virginia Relic's description, Virginia Relic's description shall be deemed correct. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", on page 299 of the Revised and Supplemented 1993 Edition, regarding this type Schenkl projectile, "the nose is much more rounded to accommodate a maximum load of case-shot balls (lead)." and "This brittle zinc fuze was almost always badly damaged on impact, so fully intact specimens are rarely found." This Schenkl case-shot shell fragment will be an excellent educational tool on Civil War artillery or addition to any excavated Civil War relic collection.
