.58 Caliber Three-Piece Shaler Bullet

SOLD

This complete .58 caliber three-piece Shaler bullet, with its matching dirty grey-white patina, is in excellent condition and was recovered in Culpeper County, VA. All three parts, individually, are in great shape and fit together very well. The Shaler bullet is by far one of the most interesting bullets used during the Civil War. It is a multi-piece .58 caliber bullet that was invented by Reuben Shaler and patented on August 12, 1862. After it was fired, the three sections would spread apart allowing for more impact points on its designated target. An example of this bullet can be found in "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" by W. Reid McKee and M. E. Mason, Jr. on page 61, item # 520. A scan of this page can be found in the additional images. Other reference books where this type of bullet can be found are Thomas & Thomas: 155C & RBTR part I: 263. This complete Shaler bullet measures approximately .58 x 1.31. It is one of the nicest examples I have come across and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War excavated bullet or general relic collection.
