US 3 inch Absterdam Type III Shell with Patent Date

SOLD

Item: US 3 inch Absterdam Type III Shell with Patent Date
Fusing: Brass Absterdam time fuse adaptor.
Construction:
Cast iron with brass ring sabot.
Approximate size:
Weight: 9.2 pounds. Diameter: 2.94 inches. Length: 8-5/8 inches.
Condition:
Very good, non-excavated. The iron body is lightly pitted but is in overall great shape. Its fuse is not present. Its brass sabot, with its six cuts for expansion, is present and is clearly stamped "ABSTERDAMS / PATENT / FEB . 23 . 1864".  As a preservative measure the shell was lightly clear coated at some point. It is inactive.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments:  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War Revised and Supplemented Edition 1993 ", there have been no battlefield finds of Absterdam shells, bolts, or case-shots. Mr. George has only seen one excavated example which was recovered from Parrott's West Point test range. This shell would have been fired from a 3 inch ordnance or Parrott rifle. An example of a similar Absterdam 3 inch shell (but with case-shot) is pictured in the above mentioned book on page 71. This example will be an excellent addition to any Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
