This excavated apothecary scale equal arm beam is in excellent condition and was recovered in the Malvern Hill, VA area during the 1970s. Scales were used by field physicians to precisely measure ingredients for preparing medications and other medical compounds to treat sick and wounded soldiers. An image of a complete apothecary scale is included in the additional images. This excavated arm is constructed of cast brass with an iron pin which allows to arm to freely move. The brass has a dusty green patina and the device measures approximately 6 inches in length with the center support shaft measuring approximately 2-1/4 inches. There are no cracks, breaks, bends or repairs. It was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War medical or general relic collection.
