Artillery Friction Primers

SOLD

These five artillery friction primers are in fair to very good condition. According to the digger's typed label they were recovered February 18, 1967, from Suffolk, VA. Friction primers were mostly constructed of brass and used to ignite the powder charge inside a cannon tube. Some of the primers appear complete while others are either used examples or damaged. They range in length from 1-1/8 to 1-3/4 inches.

Reference: Examples of similar friction primers are pictured in the following reference book:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 119, item 4.

See above page in additional images.

These friction primers were acquired directly from the family of E. V. Smith. Mr. Smith, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter, thoughtfully recorded their date and location of recovery. The digger's label and a Virginia Relics glass top display case will be included. This artillery display of friction primers will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield or general relic collection.
