This excavated artillery saber was recovered Chesterfield County, VA on March 14, 1996, by the late Glenn Trimmer of Virginia. While missing the grip and portion of the blade, its brass guard, pommel, and approximately 15-1/2 inches of the blade are present. The upper portion of the guard has separated from the pommel. All parts however are solidly affixed with no movement between them. Both guard and pommel have a very pleasing deep green patina. The iron blade has been treated with electrolysis and is stable. The saber's overall measurement is 20-3/4 inches.
Over the decades of relic hunting the digger maintained two journals listing and, often describing in detail, information regarding the relic's recovery. This relic is listed in his second journal detailing its recovery and other items he found on that hunt. This page is included in the additional images. Because the journal pages may contain exact recovery locations and other personal information, some of the information has been removed. A complete unredacted journal page copy for this relic will be included with its purchase. In addition to his journal page, his original collection room display card describing the saber's recovery, will also be included. A scan of this card is included in the additional images. This artillery saber will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War battlefield, campsite or general relic collection.
