This excavated model 1854 Austrian Lorenze Type I musket was recovered in the area of Cold Harbor, VA. All parts were recovered from the same hole and included the barrel, measuring approximately 37-1/2 inches in length, with both and front and rear sights, one barrel band, its lock plate with hammer, trigger guard, trigger assembly and butt plate with both attachment screws. The parts were cleaned and clear coated decades ago as a protective measure. They are in solid condition and could easily be wired to a display board that would look great hanging over a den fireplace, office or family room. What distinguished a Type I Lorenze from a type II is its rear ''high-block" sight as the type II Lorenze has a "leaf" sight. The model 1854 Austrian Lorenze musket was used during the Civil War by both Confederate and Federal troops. It was acquired directly from the digger, a retired Marine Lieutenant Colonel, who you will see in the additional images (on far left), along with his hunting buddies and their detectors dating to the 1970-80s. This musket will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War firearm or general relic collection.
Note: Approximately 250,000 Austrian Lorenze muskets were imported by the Union and as many as 100,000 were imported by the Confederacy.
