Item: US Model 1835 Socket Bayonet
Condition: Excavated. While the socket and neck are in good shape, the blade clearly shows heavy deterioration from ground action, but what remains is remarkably solid. The locking ring with screw are present and fixed in place. The white mark on the socket is believed to be "White Out" and likely applied for identification purposes. This bayonet has been treated with electrolysis and lightly clear coated for preservation purposes. There are no bends or repairs.
Approximate size: 19-7/8-inch overall length; 17-1/8-inch blade length; 7/8-inch blade width; 2-5/8-inch socket length. (Note: The measurements vary from original measurements due to bayonet's excavated relic condition.)
Recovered: Chancellorsville, VA.
Reference: Additional information is found in the following reference book:
Comments: The bayonet was recovered by the late Glenn Trimmer who had it nicely displayed in a glass top coffee table with several others in his relic room. An image of the display is included in the additional images. Over several decades Glenn maintained detailed records of his finds. According to Robert M. Reilly, author of the above-mentioned reference book, regarding the US Model 1835 bayonet, "One of the most historically significant bayonets was that for the Model 1835 / 1840 musket. Its importance lies in the fact that it set the precedent for virtually all subsequent socket bayonets fabricated for the Ordnance Department almost until the beginning of the twentieth century. Only relatively minor physical and dimensional changes would differentiate this weapon from later types."
This bayonet will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bayonet, firearm, or general relic collection.
