Item: US Model 1855 Socket Bayonet - .58 Caliber
Construction: Iron
Condition: Excavated. Iron shows deterioration from ground action, but what remains is remarkably solid. It appears to have been treated with electrolysis and lightly clear coated so as to stabilize the iron. A section of the socket is missing on one side. The locking ring with screw is present but is missing a small section as well. There are no repairs.
Recovered: Deep Bottom area, Henrico County, VA.
Approximate size: 21 inches overall length; 3-inch socket length.
Reference: A similar example of this type of bayonet is pictured in:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: The bayonet was recovered by the late Glenn Trimmer who had it nicely displayed in a glass top coffee table with several others in his relic room. An image of the display is included in the additional images. Over several decades Glenn maintained detailed records of his finds. This bayonet will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bayonet, firearm, or general relic collection.
