Federal Bormann Time Fuse

SOLD

This excavated Federal Bormann time fuze was recovered in the area of Alexandria, LA. Between being constructed of the soft metal combination of lead and tin and the resulting wear from ground action, its raised hashmarks and numbers are nearly all gone. The threads, while present, are also distorted from ground action. It appears that the fuze was punched at about the "1" second mark. There are no repairs.

Similar examples of this type fuze are pictured in:

  • "Artillery Fuses of the Civil War" by Charles H. Jones, page 22.
  • "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War" 1993 edition, by Thomas S. Dickey and Peter C. George, page 441, cross section.
  • "Civil War Projectiles II Small Arms & Field Artillery with Supplement" by W. Reid McKee and M. E. Mason, Jr., page 150.
  • "Field Artillery Ordnance 1861 - 1865", by Jack W. Melton, Jr., and Lawrence E. Pawl, page 46.
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 118.

Scans of the above noted reference book pages are included in the additional images.

This artillery relic from Louisiana will be an excellent addition to any Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
