This small brass heel plate with cut-out heart design was designed to reinforce wood and leather soles of boots and shoes of the period. They have been regularly recovered in areas of Civil War activity. It has been suggested that the petite heel plates, with the heart shape, were on the heels of footwear worn by ladies of the night perhaps visiting the troops. This heel plate is constructed of cast brass and measures approximately 1-7/16 x 2-9/16 inches. It is in excellent condition and has a green-brown patina under a light layer of yellow soil. There are no bends, cracks, breaks, or repairs and will be a very nice addition to any general relic collection.
