Brass Heel Plate

Item: Brass Heel Plate
Use: To reinforce wooden and leather soles.
Construction: Cast brass.
Approximate size: 2-3/8 x 2-1/16
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its surface has a yellow soil covered brown-green patina.  No cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: North Anna, VA area.
Reference: Examples of a similar, but not exact, brass and iron heel plates are found in the following relic reference book:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 170.

Comments: Heel plates are recovered from time to time in areas of Civil War activity. This example was acquired directly from the family of the digger who hunter several Virginia Civil War sites during his lifetime. It will be a very nice addition to any excavated relic collection.
