This small but heavy cast brass identification plate with clip corners has a dark yellow brass patina. Its front, which appears to have been gently cleaned at some point, is inscribed "W. G. MERRICK / ALBEMARLE Co. / Va and what appears to be either "GLENDOM", "GLENDON'Y'' or 'GLENDOWER". The rear is still soil coated with two short attachment posts. The plate's body has a gentle curve. My minimal research indicates that a William Gordon Merrick purchased a property located in Albemarle County, Va in 1867. Merrick lived there for forty years and was an agent for the James River Valley Migration Society, who sought 'intending settlers' for Albemarle County after the Civil War. This plate measures approximately 1-1/4 x 2-3/8 inches and will be an excellent addition to any excavated relic collection.
