Item: US Model 1859 Brass Spur Marked ''HORSTMANN"
Construction: Cast brass with iron rowel.
Approximate size: 2-3/4 (W) x 6 (L) inches
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated, rowel present. Well-made spur with an overall dull brass patina. Rowel freely spins. On the inner heel band is the stamp of William J. Horstmann Company of Philadelphia with every letter of "HORSTMANN" clear and present. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Comments:  According to "Historic American Spurs" by the late Howard R. Crouch, the Horstmann Company "did furnish a great amount of equipment to the Union and undoubtedly many spurs". An example of this spur can be found in the above mentioned reference book on page 35 as item US 6. A scan of this page is included in the additional images in this listing. This finely crafted spur will be an excellent addition to any Civil War spur, cavalry, campsite, or general relic collection.
