Calendar Pocket Disc 1853 - 1854

SOLD

This pre-Civil War excavated pocket calendar disc, for the last six months of the year 1853, and first six months of the year 1854, is in good condition. One side shows July through December 1853 in a "T" shaped table with January through June 1854 in a similar table on the other. The top part of each table contains a column listing the months, seven columns listing the days of the week (different arrangements of the letters S, M, T,W, T, F, S), and a column listing the numbers of days in the month. Below this is a table of the numbers from 1 to 31, arranged in numerical order in consecutive rows (the last four squares in the last row of the table have stars). One can read, for example, that in July of 1853, a month with 31 days, the first fell on a Friday and the 31st on a Sunday. While much of the actual calendar lettering for the months, dates, and days is still readable with a light and magnifier, most of the additional small raised lettering found around the edge of both the obverse and reverse is nearly unreadable due to ground action. It is believed to be marked on the 1854 side with "CALENDAR FOR / 1854 / ISSUED SEMI-ANNUALLY" at the top, and "J. B. HYDE 162 FULTON ST. N.Y. PUBLISHER." at the bottom. The 1853 side is believed to be marked "ENT : ACCOR : TO ACT OF CONGRESS IN / THE YEAR 1851 BY I. B. PERSON / 1853" at the top and "IN THE CLK’S OFFICE OF THE DIST. COURT OF THE SOUTHERN DIST. OF NEW YORK." at the bottom. This relic was acquired directly from the digger, Robert Braswell, Jr. of Gaston, NC who recovered many fine relics from both North Carolina and Virginia over several decades. Learn more about Robert and his years of relic detecting by clicking on his name above. This calendar disc, measuring approximately 1-5/16 inches, has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs and will be an excellent addition to any excavated pre-Civil War or general relic collection.
