Camp Carved Bullet

SOLD

This excavated camp carved bullet was acquired directly from the digger who recovered it decades ago in an area occupied by the 35th Georgia Camp French in Evansport, VA during the winter of 1861-1862. Occasionally bullets are recovered with whittle marks or, in rare instances, intricate carvings, hand-crafted by soldiers using their pocket knives just to pass the time. This carved example is the top half of what is believed to be a .69 caliber conical bullet. It has an overall a pleasing waxy white patina. The bullet's tip was carved away and its upper body surface has overall carve marks. It appears that a portion the bullet's original base rim was carved away and what remained was notched in eight places. The digger believed the bullet may have been used as a game piece, specifically a pawn in a game of chess. It measures approximately .651 x .851 inches and will be an excellent addition to any excavated carved Civil War bullet or general relic collection.
