Item: Model 1858 Federal "Bullseye" Pattern Canteen
Approximate size: 7-3/4 inch diameter.
Condition: Very good, non-excavated. This canteen is in overall solid shape and while the raised rings are not pronounced, it appears to have seven. One side has a small shallow one-inch dent as indicated with a red arrow in the additional images. All three strap holders are present and solidly attached. Its tall tin spout is present. No cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Reference: A similar but not exact example with seven rings and a tin spout is found in the following canteen reference book:
See above page in additional images.
Comments: According to the above-mentioned reference book, seven rings would identify it as a product of Hadden. Porter & Booth of Philadelphia, PA sometime between 1862 and 1864. This canteen will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War canteen, campsite, or general relic collection.
