Comments: According to the author of the above-mentioned reference book:
"Canteen 233 Believed to be among the 40,000 tin spout canteens furnished by Albert Jewett following an April 1863 Cincinnati Depot contract. Its bright finished tin and rounded oblate spheroid shape are unlike any others from identified Cincinnati makers. It was found with the remains of a typical Jewett stopper including a brass screw-nut. The twisted brass wire was an improvement introduced in 1874. This is one of 300 decommissioned canteens found in a pit at Fort Oglethorpe, GA, where they were discarded during the Spanish American War."
This canteen will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War canteen, campsite, or general relic collection.
