Cartridge Box and Sling

SOLD

This Federal cartridge box and sling, for the .58 caliber Springfield pattern rifle or a rifle by any of the other contract makers of .58 caliber military rifles, is in very good condition. Both box "ears", cartridge tins, and strap roller buckles are all present. The box exterior surface leather, while somewhat pliable, shows wear with moderate crazing and cracking. The outer flap of the box is "US" embossed indicating that it is a Pattern of July 1864 where, at some point, an original US cartridge box plate was added. To secure the plate to the outer flap, two slits were made so as to accommodate the two wire loops on the rear of the US plate. Two one inch wood strips were inserted securely through the loops of the plate to the rear of the flap instead of the typical leather thong. Its outer flap closure strap and large brass finial are both present and in good condition. The interior flaps show minor surface scars but are in overall very good condition. The rear of the box has the belt and shoulder strap loops still intact. The boxes were designed so the box could have been worn on the soldier’s belt or on the sling, whichever the soldier preferred. The sling is complete with the same overall moderate cracking and crazing. Its eagle plate is attached by a more recently added leather thong as the original likely disintegrated over time. Both cartridge plate and eagle plate are complete and in very good condition with very pleasing matching dark brass patinas. A scanned image of a soldier with cartridge box, sling, and plates is included in the additional images showing its use. This cartridge box and sling will be an excellent addition to any Civil War accoutrement, firearm, or general relic collection.
