Carved .54 Caliber Confederate Gardner Bullet

SOLD

This excavated carved .54 caliber Confederate Gardner bullet is an excellent example of campsite life of the Civil War soldier. Every now and then, bullets are recovered with whittle marks or, in rare instances, intricate carvings, hand-crafted by soldiers using their pocket-knives just to pass the time. In this case a near perfectly round hole was made just below the nose in the upper body to possibly used as a fishing sinker or plumb bob. It is excellent condition with the exception minor surface chipping primarily in the base and nose areas. On one side of the upper body are the letters "MH" in black representing its recovery location of Malvern Hill, VA. It is from the collection of Glenn Trimmer who, with written permission, hunted the privately owned land in the area Malvern Hill. It has an overall waxy surface with a tan-white patina and measures approximately .539 x 1.101 inches. It weighs approximately 425 grains. This fine example will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet or general relic collection.

Another Gardner bullet with a similar size hole in its skirt is depicted in "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 109. See this page in the additional images.
