Item: Confederate 2.9-Inch Read-Parrott Shell
Gun: 10-pounder Parrott rifle, 2.9-inch caliber.
Construction: Cast iron with thin iron sabot.
Fuzing: Wood fuze adaptor for paper time fuze.
Approximate size: Weight: 9.6 pounds. Diameter: 2.86 inches. Length: 8-5/8 inches.
Condition: Very good, fired, excavated. The iron body is very stable with minimal pitting and no coating. The wood fuze adaptor is no longer present. The thin iron sabot is present along with a clearly visible lathe dimple on its base. The shell has been deactivated and there are no repairs.
Recovered: Wilderness, VA area.
Comments: The shell was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
